Alpha Phi
day after day, I'll long for love returned
found atop a hill nestled in the city by the sea
as of now, I'm bored with dreams
no longer will I keep out of sight
found atop a hill nestled in the city by the sea
a flock of angels partially robed in red
no longer will I keep out of sight
today there's magic swirling in the air
a flock of angels partially robed in red
etched an arrow upon my heart
today there's magic swirling in the air
and beauties will swarm to me like drops of water in the sky
etched an arrow upon my heart
as I ran to catch the dream of paradise
and beauties will swarm to me like drops of water in the sky
blowing kisses scented with chocolate cream
as I ran to catch the dream of paradise
comely faces looked outward far as I could see
blowing kissed scented with chocolate cream
drawing breath straight from my soul
comely faces looked outward far as I could see
with warmth enough to burn away the fog
drawing breath straight from my soul
I spoke in tune with the beat of my heart
with warmth enough to burn away the fog
I was given a kiss of chocolate cream
I spoke in tune with the beat of my heart
ended up looking like a fool
I was given a kiss of chocolate cream
as of now, I'm bored of dreams
ended up looking like a fool
but day after day, I'll still long for love returned

I wrote this for my creative reading class. The assignment was to write a poem using a traditional format, and for this I chose the pantoum. A pantoum is written with four line verses, or quatrains. The second and fourth lines of the previous quatrain become the first and third lines of the next one, with the first and third lines of the first quatrains becoming the second and fourth lines of the last one. Writing a pantoum is like unrolling a rope ladder, the lines tumble and fall over each other and eventually into place.
What inspired me to write this is an event that occurred during my first semester in college. The Alpha Phi sorority was holding a kiss-a-thon on the quad, and this got me very excited. I thought it was going to be an event where the sorority girls gave away kisses for charity or something. My friends were telling me that it was probably a huge joke where you'd end up kissing a guy in drag and that I'd end up looking stupid. When I saw that it was actually being done by the sorority, I called them over so they could watch me kiss the entire sorority. I worked up all my courage and asked one of the sisters about the event, and she said they were selling Hershey's kisses to raise money for breast cancer research. They weren't selling kisses scented with chocolate cream, but kisses of chocolate cream instead. The Kiss-a-thon wasn't what I expected it to be, so I walked away feeling disappointed and amused at the same time. My friends still say I made an idiot of myself, but admit that they didn't have the courage to do what I did though. It seemed like the perfect thing to immortalize in a loosely structured poetic form that falls over itself and into place. It's a poetic form that beats to the rhythm of life: it's awkward to write, fun to read, nice to hear, and ultimately falls into place.
